title: circle two
Paintings:
In an effort to establish consistency for the titles of Frederick Hammersley’s paintings, the Frederick Hammersley Foundation provides the following guidelines based on his records and practice:
Only the first letter of the first word of the title is capitalized with the remaining words all in lower case unless there is a proper name, for example, Plugged in and Peter pays Paul. In addition, when the ampersand or plus sign is included, it should remain so and not be spelled out, for example, Rhyme & reason and Two + fro.
Numbers associated with paintings indicate the work’s position in the sequence of paintings Hammersley produced in a particular year. For example, Mutual fund, #1 1972, indicates that it was the first painting he produced in 1972. The number is not part of the title and should always appear with the year. When months and days are indicated or known, they may follow the number and year, in parentheses, for example, Circle two, #32 1963 (November 14).
For publication materials and exhibition labels, the title information should appear as follows, Mutual fund, #1 1972. The number is not italicized or enclosed in parentheses and a comma should not be placed between it and the year. In publications, the title of the work should appear next to its reproduced image. For exhibitions the title should appear on the wall next to the piece.
Since Hammersley considered the custom, artist-made frames for his pieces as part of the work, the preference is to include them in reproductions of works, especially organic paintings.
