Beatrice Wood is best known for her ceramic sculpture. However, Wood did not begin to study ceramics until she was forty years old as her early artistic life was spent as an actress. The majority of Wood’s drawings come from a clearly female voice and a personal perspective. Among her reflective self-portraits are I Shock Myself, which shares its title with the artist’s 1985 autobiography.
