eMuseum Notes
A Renaissance man by nature, William Lumpkins was a member of the Transcendental Painting Group, a practicing Zen Buddhist, an architect, and an environmentalist. An architectural pioneer, Lumpkins designed and built some of the fist passive solar houses in New Mexico. Passive solar architecture uses the sun’s energy to regulate the interior temperature of space through the intrinsic qualities of the building material and design of the house. Lumpkins’ building designs were inspired by New Mexico’s traditional Puebloan architecture, which incorporated adobe building material and stepped structural facades that echoed the color and form of the environment around them.
