Gail Rieke moved to New Mexico in 1970. Soon after, she went to the State Fair and saw a Navajo woman weaving on a loom and decided she wanted to learn to weave. She learned primarily from Noel Bennett (also a Santa Fe artist) and Bennett's book Working With the Wool. Shining Way was on the cover of an issue of Fiberarts Magazine Nov/Dec 1978.
