DescriptionMonkey sitting on the back of a donkey against a background of red hills and a blue skyeMuseum Notes
A student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the late 1960s, Tom Palmore was first known for his witty photorealist paintings of gorillas and exotic birds. Palmore moved to Santa Fe in 1980 where he began to paint portraits of animals symbolic of the region, including bulls, mountain lions, bobcats, and buffaloes, often positioned against unlikely backdrops. Though the monkey is not an animal really associated with the southwest, the burro has a long and storied relationship with New Mexico. The desert background firmly situates the unlikely couple in a distinctly southwestern environment.
