Text Entries
According to the artist, the subject of the photograph is twenty-two-year-old Ronaldo Tazca Damien, a Peruvian man from the city of Huancayo in the state of Junin.  Damien has worked at the ranch for four years as a goat herder, using a special work visa.
Her series Mitchell's Lot is named for the ranch founded by her maternal great-grandfather, who came from Scotland.  In her artist statement about this body of work, Thelwell writes about tracing the movement of farm animals "from the desert to the city, from rancher to halal...consumer, from Peruvian ranch hand to Mexican line worker."  While the series explicitly explores the halal goat economy in the United States, the artist writes that, "Over the years the project has evolved into a story about how we feed each other on many different levels."  This would be the first photograph by the artist to be represented in the collection.
