eMuseum Notes
Metzker is known for his dark images of urban Chicago and Philadelphia but in 1985, after completing work on a retrospective of his photographs, he traveled abroad and lived for several months in Tuscany, Italy. Starting a new chapter of life and career, the artist concentrated on the natural landscape for the first time, a subject that occupied him for the next fifteen years. This is one of his early landscapes made in Utah, where he was both inspired and challenged by the stark light and unfamiliar vegetation.
