DescriptionStepped rectangular wool textile with yellow background and white lines.eMuseum Notes
The white slashes represent split rail fences, the bold palette a response to the sunshine and clarity of light here. The stepped structure of the weaving has its visual equivalent in the steps and architecture of Machu Picchu in her homeland of Peru, as well as the Pueblo Revival style of architecture in New Mexico. As with all of her work, the alternating structure of the weaving reflects her sense of having a dual identity, with an American father and a Chilean mother, raised in Peru and Bolivia yet educated in the United States.
