Description
Jim Dine has often returned to the same themes and images throughout his career, usually commonplace objects such as a robe, hearts, or, as in this lithograph, tools. Dine created this print at Tamarind Institute, a printshop where he has returned often and worked with master printer Bill Lagattuta, who is gifting this print. Dine has used tools in an autobiographical sense. His father and grandfather both ran a hardware store in Cincinnati, where he grew up. Moreover, these are “tools of the trade” that he uses as a painter, draftsman, and printer. In that sense, Tools in the Earth is about the process of artmaking.
