eMuseum Notes
Spanish-born artist Teo González is known for his grid-like compositions composed of thousands of dots that are visually analogous to cells, Ben-day dots, or pixels. González’s process is reliant on both a systematic visual architecture and the element of chance, as the physics of evaporation cause a dispersion of the color. Within these square and usually monochromatic paintings, there is great tension between the repetition of the cells and the individuality of each. The use of gold in #290 brings to mind the Spanish Conquistadors’ search for the elusive Cities of Gold in this region.
