Saudek studied at the School for Industrial Photography in Prague (1950-52) and subsequently worked various jobs (farm worker, stoker) while working privately on his photography. In 1963, a friend lent him a copy of the Museum of Modern Art publication The Family of Man which moved him profoundly and inspired him to take pictures reflecting the human condition. Saudek’s work focuses almost exclusively on people, many of them friends and family, as may be the case with this tender portrait.
