eMuseum Notes
This portrait of Chii, a boy of mixed Native American heritage, was made when the artist found him along on a dirt road outside a Yuchi tribal burial ground. An elder lady had passed away, one of the last of a handful of fluent Yuchi speakers who had been close to Chii’s mother. Chii’s solemn expression marks the gravity of this loss, perhaps hinting at an understanding that goes beyond his years.
