eMuseum Notes
This canoe was designed by the Ktunaxa people of (sometimes called Kutenai or Kootenay in English) for navigating, hunting, and fishing in the lakes of their northeastern region. The photographer admired it enough to include it in at least eight photographs he made on the shores of Flathead Lake in Montana, whether because he found it emblematic of these lake dwellers or because of its picturesque, romantic associations.
