DescriptionTwo young female figures in contorted poses and bright-colored clothing emerge from black background. The figure at rear is bent over and her head and arms are not visible. The woman in the foreground appears to be leaping or flying with her right hand raised over her head, thumb tucked inward.eMuseum Notes
In her series Zummarella, the artist portrays and lampoons a modern type of super-hero: the woman who has it all. The dynamic, destabilized poses of these women, their bright, candy-colored clothing, and the sheer size of the prints tip us off that these are meant to be seen as larger-than-life figures. The artist caricatures women who attempt perfection in every aspect of their lives – relationships, family, appearance – but she is not without empathy for the contortions involved in playing such a role.
