DescriptionLarge folio handbound in linen with a black leather label on the front with embossed lettering (“CAVAFY”) in linen-covered box, containing six poems by Cavafy (in English and Greek), translated by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard, and five photographs (portraits of young men) by Duane Michals, with an afterword by Michals.eMuseum Notes
The writings of Constantine Cavafy (1863-1933) provided the inspiration for this special edition book, which joins a long history of publications in which images are meant to illuminate the text without necessarily illustrating them. Here, the photographer Duane Michals summons the poet’s imagination – filled with Greek legends, sensual pleasures, nostalgia, and regret – to evoke Cavafy’s themes in pictures and to help add him to the pantheon of neo-classical writers.
