Description
Nicola López’s work explores the built environment, often with an element of ruin or apocalypse, symbiosis or parasitism. In Monument VII, the bent armature of a building in ruin and the leaning, partially destroyed tower that predominates the image, bring to mind the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001. The fact that López’s monument is in ruins brings into question the presumed longevity of a monument, and the civilization that erected that monument. Rather than marking a significant accomplishment of a civilization, Monument VII memorializes a loss of or for that civilization.
