eMuseum Notes
Katsura Funakoshi is a well-known contemporary Japanese artist who is known primarily as a sculptor but also works with prints and drawings. Regardless of the medium, his subject matter is always the human form. His primary influences have been temple portrait sculptures of the Kamakura period (1185-1333) as well as the work of his father, Yasutake Funakoshi, also a sculptor. Katsura Funakoshi’s figures are always recognizable by their elongated necks and similar facial features. The artist’s use of acidic, strident colors contribute an element of dissonance that makes this portrait compelling.
