Christine Taylor Patten is a longtime northern New Mexico resident who works with ink and a crowquill pen. She arrives at abstract imagery from a multitude of hatch marks in varying densities. Tangent #2 assumes the appearance of a cell or a planet, with the trace of an orbit path encircling it. Patten’s Tangent series was an offshoot of her micros series, in which she endeavored to make 2,000 one-inch crowquill and ink drawings that evolved one to the next. (Each was titled from year 1 A.D. to 2000 A.D., as the subtitle of Tangent #2 does as well.) As with much of her work, Tangent #2 uses a visual language of science that builds on a long history of the intersection of art and science in New Mexico.
