These images are photograms, created by using pages from a magazine as a “negative” and shining light through them to the photographic paper below. Heinecken was keenly interested in how print and television media use images to influence their audiences and often used his art to reveal that practice. In this piece, he exposes more than one page on each sheet of paper to underscore the complexity of media messages about female beauty and sexuality in American culture.
