Text Entries
Martin McWilliam describes his work as a search for the tension between clay and fire, as well as the element of chance in the outcome of the work. His objects appear to be vessels, but they fool the eye in that they have limited depth and are non-functional. He thus refers to them as “pots in essence” and his sculptures are meant to challenge the viewer’s perception. Born in South Africa, raised in England, spending time in Japan, and now living in Germany, McWilliams has brought many influences to his work, most notably the British studio pottery of Bernard Leach.
