Descriptionjar with frieze of feather motifseMuseum Notes
Maria and Julian Martinez are prime examples of experimental Native American pottery that quickly developed into the traditional pottery of San Ildefonso Pueblo in the twentieth century. This work of art exemplifies the category of a New Mexico prime object of aesthetic change that fits the museum’s mission as the state’s art museum. This is also an example of the works that developed from Edgar Lee Hewett’s Santa Fe Program encouraging “revivals” of Native arts 1910 to 1923. This jar form is one that Maria perfected for the tourist market.
