Though he had been a photographer since the age of twelve, Willard Van Dyke didn’t become serious about the medium until 1928 when he met the California photographer Edward Weston and became his assistant. Several years later, the two helped found an important photography movement called Group 6/64, emphasizing the sharp-focus, modernist approach to photography seen in this industrial view. Only a few years later, Van Dyke gave up still photography for social documentary filmmaking, believing it to be the best way to reach a large audience.
