The series “Chronic II” powerfully evokes the difficulties of living with a chronic illness. The artist includes snapshots of a young girl in some of the photographs as a reference to her own diagnosis at age three. Other images feature the syringes, injections, and other medical equipment that serve as a constant reminder of an ongoing illness. In these tough but truthful photographs, the artist’s creativity and voice come through loud and clear, drowning out whatever limitations she may have been dealt.

The series of photographs came to the museum from the artist’s estate via Astilli Fine Art in the sequence in which it is numbered. The museum has no evidence that there was an intended sequence or that the present numbering reflects an intended sequence.  A note attached to the material, in an unknown hand, reads: “Set of 12 –/11 used in CHronic II” [sic].

The date range of 1993-2011 is based on Rumsey’s series Chronic, a sculptural installation that was exhibited at Bard College in 1995 and did not appear to include photographs. As the title of the photographic series is Chronic II, presumably the works followed or slightly overlapped with the making of the initial Chronic works.
