DescriptionMusical composition paper with broad wash of ink across the centereMuseum Notes
Stuart Arends ink-on-music-paper work expands the notion of what constitutes a drawing---and what constitutes a painting—by bridging the two. The piece is done in a reductive style with areas of ink covering the musical staffs of music paper. He moves the ink across the surface of the paper as a painter would paint on a canvas. Yet in working with ink on paper he is employing materials more conventionally associated with a drawing. At the same time, this work also complicates the visual with the suggestion of erased sound.
