John Beech is best known for his quirky sculptural objects, but he also creates two-dimensional works such photographs upon which he paints or tapes—often of industrial or suburban subjects. Beech also creates drawings, such as this double-sided work that the artist gifted to art collector Natalie Forman, after her husband Irving passed away. In a letter accompanying this drawing, the artist wrote: “I find an endless fascination with the immediacy and presence possible with works on paper/working on paper.” Here, his word play suggests a relationship in his artistic practice between a creation and the creating, a noun and a verb. Moreover, the note along with the immediacy of the drawings illustrates the close relationship between artist and patron.
