James Howell is known primarily for his monochrome paintings in various shades of gray. Like many monochrome painters, Howell has dedicated his artistic practice to demonstrating that what at first glance appears simple is actually more complex and with infinite variations and expressive potential. Howell reduces the artwork to its most elemental material, while at the same time emptying it of meaning and making the viewer concentrate not on representation but on material and pure abstraction.
