Descriptionmonochromatic thickly layered white paint
eMuseum Notes
Peter Tollens is one of the monochrome painters that the Formans collected in depth. The thickly layered white of this painting inevitably brings to mind Robert Ryman. Tollens’ handling of paint and his focus on the materiality of the paint is further emphasized by the object-ness of the painting. Tollen’s monochromes are deceptively simple, for further examination of the painting reveals the many layers of paint beneath the surface.
