eMuseum Notes
Known primarily for his concave monochrome paintings, this aquatint continues Heiner Thiel’s play with illusion and perception of dimensionality. This aquatint serves as an instructive contrast to Thiel’s shaped paintings with their colorful and pristine surfaces. Whereas Thiel distorts the geometric line of his monochrome paintings that converge sculpture and painting, the linearity of the aquatint is notable. At the same time, one can see the legacy of Minimalism that informs Thiel’s work in the sense that the rectalinearity of the aquatint and the resulting form are evocative of Donald Judd’s 100 untitled works in mill aluminum.
