eMuseum Notes
Ernest Knee came to Santa Fe in 1931 and quickly established himself as a figure in the arts community, befriending now-legendary local characters such as Laura Gilpin, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Will Shuster, John Sloan, and visiting photographers including Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. Though he served as personal photographer to aviator Howard Hughes, did cinematography in remote Venezuela, and operated a successful woodworking business, Knee is now known primarily for his romantic images of northern New Mexico, portraying it as a rustic place of closely guarded traditions, vernacular architecture, and gigantic cloud formations towering over rugged hills.
