Text Entries

The piece was received framed and should be examined for additional  information when unframed.

The title refers to the artist’s sculpture Black Kites (graphite on human skull), which was created over a six-month period in 1997 for Documenta X in Kassel, Germany.
This photograph presents a view of Orozco’s sculpture Black Kites (graphite on human skull), created in 1997 for the contemporary art festival Documenta X in Kassel, Germany. The organic irregularities of the human skull contrasts with the precise, geometric form imposed upon it by the artist. The obvious wear and yellowing of the skull – having survived a lifetime of use by its inhabitant – also contrasts with the black regularity of the grid the artist attempts to apply over its uneven surface.
The photograph was received by the museum framed. After being on display in the exhibition Hunting + Gathering the piece was unframed for storage purposes. It was decided by the Collections staff at the time of un-framing to dispose of the frame and it was properly discarded.
