Text Entries

The print is collotype with monotype in two colors (brown and blue), printed on Arches 88 paper, bon a tirer, in an edition of 10 with 2 printer’s proofs and 2 artist’s proofs (11 Roman-numbered editions). Printed by the artist in collaboration with Mark Klett, Jan Mehn, and Joseph Segura. The collotype project includes Landscape with Cloud Variations 1-5, made during Hahn’s residency at Arizona State University in 1986.

In a conversation with curator Katherine Ware (May 2014), Hahn said she ultimately didn’t like Landscape with Cloud Variations 1 and 2 and destroyed her prints of those two images. Copies probably exist with Mark Klett and at Arizona State University. Hahn said that she directed Mark Klett on what to photograph and Klett made the collotypes because he knew how and she didn’t. She added the blue cloud variations in monotype, working with Joseph Segura, the Master Printer for Arizona State University’s Print Research Facility, and Jan Mehn.
Known for her playful and irreverent approach to photography, Betty Hahn again plays with the conventions  of the art world in this image from the series “Landscape with Cloud Variations.” Her landscape is small, rather than filling the whole page, but her sky is large and impressionistic, fully surrounding the landscape at times. She has also collaborated with another photographer and two printmakers to create this piece, instead of claiming sole authorship.
