The original acidic cardboard backing was removed from the piece and replaced with an archival backing prior to exhibition. The original backing had one label affixed to it. The label was removed and is now in the Accession file.
In much of Rodick’s work, he uses the camera’s reputation for faithfully recording life to help us identify with his subjects and then manipulates the resulting picture in some way so that it reflects an interior rather than an exterior state of being. In this image from his early series “Liquid City,” he is working in a traditional black-and-white street photography style, but moves his camera during the exposure to shift the mood and meaning of the picture.
