Alberto Morales Jimenez.

Translation: The concept of education was ignored by the landowners and caciques (tyrants). It was necessary to keep the peasants ignorant so they would not realize the miserable conditions in which they lived. Purposely, instead of providing the essentials and to keep them oblivious, alcohol was charged to their accounts in the tiendas de raya (company stores). The “ideologists” of the Porfiriato would then affirm that the Indian was worthless and therefore their elimination was preferable. Translated by Aída Wester, Intern 2017.
