Known for his work with nude models in the studio, Lazorik started working more collaboratively with his subjects in the 1970s and 1980s by having his models participate in decision making during the photo shoot. This image of a ripe young woman lounging in her lingerie is one of two images in the collection from his session with Louise Jay and her mother Kari, titled “Mother, Daughter, Photographer Collaborative.” Included is a self-portrait of the photographer, whose presence is acknowledge by his image in the mirror.
The photograph was received from the donor in a brown wooden frame. Recommend unframing for storage and closer examination of print and any inscriptions or marks.

In a phone conversation and e-mail discussion with curator Katherine Ware on Nov. 10, 2016, Lazorik said that this piece is from a series of images titled “Mother, Daughter, Photographer Collaborative,” which he made with photo historian Bill Jay’s ex-wife Kari and his daughter Louise on July 28, 1982. Lazorik states that Louise Jay was renting a small apartment at the back of his home while attending UNM and studying dance. Earlier in 1982, Kari also stayed at the house while waiting for her new apartment to become available. Lazorik says that in the 1970s, he began working more collaboratively with his models, “as a way to give the model the last word, or put more cynically, share the blame.” In the 1980s, he experimented some with how the choice of title could shift the meaning of the images. In this case, the three principals worked together on the session and that is reflected in the title. Altogether, he shot 26 images and the three chose the four or five images they felt were most successful. The artist printed portfolios of these for Kari and Louse. Lazorik says that the backdrop in the picture was painted by Susan van Glahn for a session he did earlier in the year with her as a model. See also 1993.33.2 for another image from the same sitting and series.
