Woman with Cherries #13 (from the series Mother Daughter Photographer Collaborative)
Text Entries
In a phone conversation and e-mail discussion with curator Katherine Ware on Nov. 10, 2016, Lazorik said that this piece is from a series of images titled “Mother, Daughter, Photographer Collaborative,” which he made with photo historian Bill Jay’s ex-wife Kari and his daughter Louise on July 28, 1982. Lazorik states that Louise Jay was renting a small apartment at the back of his home while attending UNM and studying dance. Earlier in 1982, Kari also stayed at the house while waiting for her new apartment to become available. Lazorik says that in the 1970s, he began working more collaboratively with his models, “as a way to give the model the last word, or put more cynically, share the blame.” In the 1980s, he experimented some with how the choice of title could shift the meaning of the images. In this case, the three principals worked together on the session and that is reflected in the title. Altogether, he shot 26 images and the three chose the four or five images they felt were most successful. The artist printed portfolios of these for Kari and Louse. Lazorik says that the backdrop in the picture was painted by Susan van Glahn for a session he did earlier in the year with her as a model. See also 1993.33.2 for another image from the same sitting and series.
The photograph was made in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
