DescriptionWoman’s face covered by a black veil at center in extreme foreground. Her eyes are downcast and she appears to have a faint smile on her face.eMuseum Notes
In
this self-portrait, taken around the time of her mother’s death, Noggle
contemplates her own mortality. Though her eyes are downcast, she seems to be
smiling, perhaps contemplating a life well lived.
In a conversation with Katherine
Ware, the artist’s niece Dale Pease noted that the veil Noggle is wearing in
this photograph belonged to the artist’s mother Agnes.
In a conversation with Katherine Ware, Noggle’s friend and studio assistant Jim Holbrook said that this picture was made after Noggle’s girlfriend Nancy Barry had left her and Noggle was depressed by the breakup.
