The object was found in the fall of 2015 during an inventory of selected sculptures. From articles found in the Library, the bust was commissioned by the Council for Art of the West, a subcommittee of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation in 1993. The MNM Foundation has a notation that $750.00 was donated for the bust, but no purchase invoices have been located.

In 1933, Bandelier's wife donated a plaster-cast bust that was carved by Borglum in 1906 to the Museum of New Mexico. The plaster bust is currently in the collection of the New Mexico History Museum. The plaster bust was transfered from MOA to History on 8/26/1969. The original plaster cast was used as a model to complete a latex rubber mold for this sculpture which was cast by the Shidoni Foundry. John and Ethan Houser created the latex mold.
