Born
in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Christenberry often visited family in rural Hale
County, a place that has provided the primary inspiration for his work in
painting, sculpture, and photography. While visiting family gravesites or
admiring the distinctive architecture of the county’s old churches, the artist
often photographed tombstones and homemade grave markers, a tribute to the
faith and ingenuity of country people.
