Description
Jonson was an important figure in the development of modern art in New Mexico, as both an artist and gallery director. He lived and worked in Santa Fe from 1924 to 1950 when he moved to Albuquerque to establish the Joonson Gallery. He was also significant for his role as an educator, joining the University of New Mexico arts faculty in 1934. Though his early work consisted of stylized views of the new Mexican landscape, around 1940 he becan to work purly in abstract forms. Watercolor No. 15 is an early example of his nonfigurative work.
