The photograph is dry-mounted. Anne Noggle’s handwriting on the verso of the original mat was verified by donor and Noggle studio assistant Jim Holbrook on 12/14/16.

In an e-mail from Mariana Cook on 12/15/16, she wrote:

“I don't remember Anne very well. At Ansel's instruction, I attended one of the two weeks of the Ansel Adams Workshops in Yosemite in June of 1979. From my trusty image database, it appears I also photographed the other workshop teachers that week: John Sexton, Al Halberstadt, Al Weber and Barbara Crane. I seem to have felt the only successful portrait was of Anne because that is the only one I printed.”

This image from early in the career of the accomplished portrait photographer Mariana Cook shows her practicing her skills on another well-known portrait photographer, Anne Noggle. Cook says she took the picture while participating in the Ansel Adams Workshops in Yosemite in June of 1979, which Adams had instructed her to attend. In addition to Noggle, Cook also photographed the other teachers, including John Sexton, Al Halberstadt, Al Weber, and Barbara Crane, but Noggle’s portrait must have been the best as it is the only one the artist chose to print.
