eMuseum NotesA
detail from the artist’s 2011 photograph “Kontrollraum” (control room), this
composition emphasizes the completely banal appearance of a facsimile of the
control room of Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, quieltly
implying that danger does not always appear threatening. Four reactors were
damaged at that site in first few days after a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and
large tsunami on March 11, 2011. Though most other reactors in the area were
unaffected, the accident resulted in the release of significant radioactivity.
