eMuseum Notes
Muniz began his career as a sculptor and many of his photographs incorporate sculptural elements, such as this early piece from the series “Pictures of Wire,” for which he constructed not only a wire cage but also a faucet, an upside down chair, a light bulb, and a roll of toilet paper. He often uses everyday materials, along with humor and cultural references, to create his memorable images.
At first glance this photograph appears to be a simple line drawing on paper. This artwork is from a series of works by Vik Muniz, titled Pictures of Wire, for which he built drawings out of wire. Like most of Muniz’s work, it is created with nontraditional materials meant specifically to be photographed by a camera. The artist’s subject matter and material are diverse, ranging from portraits drafted with dirt and dust to art historical masterpieces rendered in chocolate syrup or marinara sauce.
