Before
she became a photographer, Jo Whaley was a painter and worked as a set designer
for the San Fransicso Opera Company. In her early work as a photographer,
Whaley used watercolors to add color to her black-and-white prints but
eventually she turned to color film. Here, she constructs an homage to the
Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbaran, whose “Still Life with Lemons, Oranges,
and a Rose,” from 1633, is echoed in this composition.
