In an effort to establish consistency for the titles of Frederick Hammersley’s photographs, the Fredrick Hammersley Foundation provides the following guidelines based on his records and practice:
Only the first letter of the first word of the title is capitalized with the remaining words all in lower case unless there is a proper name, for example, Plugged in and Peter pays Paul. In addition, when the ampersand or plus sign is included, it should remain so and not be spelled out, for example, Rhyme & reason and Two + fro. If the work does not have a title, that is, Hammersley did not assign a title, it should be designated as no title. No title is not italicized when in print.
Date format: When months and days are indicated or known, they may follow the year, in parentheses, for example, no title, 1963 (November 14).
For publication materials and exhibition labels, the title information should appear as follows, no title, 1963, or Sad, 1968. In publications, the title of the work should appear next to its reproduced image. For exhibitions the title should appear on the wall next to the piece.
Since Hammersley considered the custom, artist-made frames for his pieces as part of the work, the preference is to include them in reproductions of works, especially organic paintings.
