Eckel’s hybrid creations begin with her own storehouse of images photographed in her studio and in her travels. Some are taken in natural history collections and some are made with her microscope. Her technique of using existing structures to create something new parallels her interest in evolutionary development, which also takes what exists and modifies it. “Understanding the dynamics of the world humbles me,” the artist writes, “and makes me want to have less of a negative impact on it.”
