eMuseum Notes
In this quiet composition, artist Yuri Brodsky captures a moment in time in Koktebel, located on the coast of the Black Sea in Crimea. It is an entirely factual image of a woman and dog in the midst of their separate domestic routines, yet the artist’s choice of muted atmosphere and isolation of the figures gives it a lyrical quality, full of the grace and ambiguity of any ordinary moment. His approach belies the fact that Koktebel is a popular resort town, prized for its azure waters and striking volcanic peaks. Brodsky is a key figure in the second wave of the  Dnepropetrovsk School of Photography in Ukraine, described by writer and critic Yevheniy Berezner as “the school of existential contemplation.” His poetic work often situates a lone human figure in the breadth of space, underscoring the wonder and loneliness of being.
