In the midst of his successful photographic career in New York, David Michael Kennedy moved to northern New Mexico in 1984. While living in rural Cerrillos in 1991, he devoted two weeks in the spring photographing one of the region’s celebrated natural features, clouds. “Everywhere I looked, the splendor of the New Mexico skies engulfed me,” he wrote about his newfound obsession with “photographing the flowing forms.” He ultimately selected a group of ten prints to create the portfolio Cloudscapes of New Mexico (1996). His nuanced prints join in conversation with other images of clouds in the collection, including Alfred Stieglitz’s innovative Equivalents, Paul Caponigro’s poignant Ranchos San Sebastian, and Eliot Porter’s color images of the sky over Tesuque, New Mexico.
