Artist Jill O’Bryan has long explored the subject of breath in her work. This piece is from her third series of breath drawings, which was inspired by an ancient yoga mantra that imitates the natural sounds of breathing in (Hum) and breathing out (Sa). Focusing on the breath and its sounds is a meditative practice intended to erase boundaries and promote the experience of pure being. To make the drawing, O’Bryan remains still and focused for long periods of time, fully engaged with the sacred act of breath and the way it fills the volume of her body. With each breath, she makes a mark with graphite, often creating a drawing heavier than the paper on which it is drawn. This particular drawing takes the shape of a circle, a potent symbol of life and renewal.
