In the early twentieth century, a significant shift in occurred in the production of bultos, or sculptural carvings depicting religious subject matter. Carvers in Cordova, New Mexico such as José Dolores López began producing unpainted and roughly hewn bultos consistent with the abstract tendencies in modern art. Eurgencio López, great grandson of José Dolores, has continued that tradition, and his Expulsion from the Garden relies on established precedents in style and subject to depict humanity’s fall from grace. Archangel Jophiel, with flaming sword in hand, expels a naked and ashamed Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden after they disobeyed God and ate from the Tree of Knowledge.
