DescriptionA long object with an ellipse-shaped base, featuring a mint green crystalline glaze that is reminiscent of a battleship or boat rudder. Glaze crystals dot the surface, creating a variegated depth on the surface. One end of the sculpture features a slit or cut out, which one can peer through. The end of the sculpture with the cut-out slips upward into a plateau. All corners and edges are defined yet rounded.eMuseum Notes
With a practice that spans multiple decades of work in New Mexico, James Marshall’s work is fueled by minimalist aesthetics and his capacity to use his forms to transcend time and space. Cyan #382 is a part of a series of other cyan works, which show Marshall’s mastery of glaze chemistry and firing techniques. These forms push into the space around them with protrusions and cutouts, and through their sheer size. The depth of surface that is so characteristic of Marhsall’s work is demonstrated through the layered crystals in his cyan glaze, which enhance the depth of surface the closer one gets to the object. A cutout invited the viewer to gaze through the work, drawing lines that bisect and intersect across space – a clever hint of whimsy that is characteristic across Marshall’s work.
