DescriptionMan standing in front of an easel with a painting on it in a room, holding a paintbrush in his right hand and turning toward the right where a long, low table is filled with paints and related supplies. Man is wearing dark trousers, a light-colored long-sleeved shirt with the cuffs rolled up, a kerchief around his neck, and eyeglasses. He has a pipe in his mouth.
eMuseum Notes
Painter John Sloan and his wife Dolly first came to Santa Fe in 1919 at the suggestion of fellow artist Robert Henri and returned every summer. In this portrait, New Mexico photographer Ernest Knee poses Sloan in the act of painting at his easel, a style that Knee employed with other artist friends. Sloan appears relaxed in the face of the ferocious storm he is painting, calmly smoking a pipe as he dabs his brush into some paint.
